Mountain View Appoints Max Bosel as Next Police Chief

City Manager Dan Rich announced the appointment of Captain Max Bosel as the City’s next Police Chief. Rich’s selection comes after several weeks of discussions with a range of internal and community stakeholders, who painted a clear picture of the City’s current and projected public safety needs. All roads pointed Rich in the direction of Bosel to succeed Chief Scott S.G. Vermeer who, after 12 years at the helm of the department, announced his acceptance of an executive-level position with Security Industry Specialists on June 3, 2014.

Max Bosel has been appointed as Mountain View Police Department's next Police Chief.

Max Bosel has been appointed as Mountain View Police Department’s next Police Chief.

“The role of Police Chief is such an integral ingredient to the success of our City,” says City Manager Dan Rich. “Our ability to keep safe those who live, work and enjoy what our City offers is a direct result of the relationships between our community and public safety personnel. Max is uniquely qualified to take on this role and I have absolutely no doubt he will continue to exceed the high expectations we have for our Chief.

Bosel, a Mountain View resident, started his law enforcement career with the Millbrae Police Department in 1989, joining the Mountain View Police Department as an officer in December of 1995.  Over the course of his career, Bosel rose through the ranks to become a Captain in 2007 — a direct result of his exceptional operational and leadership abilities. Bosel has led all three divisions of the department and served as Interim Deputy Police Chief while Chief Vermeer oversaw the Fire Department, and he also served as Interim Assistant City Manager.

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Bosel holds a Master of Public Administration from Notre Dame de Namur University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management from Saint Mary’s College of California. Bosel is also a graduate of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program, the California POST Supervisory Leadership Institute, Leadership Mountain View and the University of Southern California’s Delinquency Control Institute.

“It is an honor to have been selected to serve as the next Police Chief for the City of Mountain View,” says Bosel. “I look forward to leading your Police Department as we continue our commitment to earning your trust and support as we strive to uphold our City’s values of treating people with respect, acting with integrity and providing exceptional service while fulfilling our community’s expectation for a safe Mountain View.” Bosel will officially take command as Police Chief on Monday, August 4, 2014, and will be paid a salary of $242,000.

That’s awesome! Max is not only a born leader, ultimate professional, but also a darn nice human being! Chief Vermeer’s shoes are large to fill, but it looks like they found the right man to fill them!

I have known Max since we entered the Academy together in 1989. As the previous entry states, he is a natural born leader. Max has always been fair and reasonable. I have no doubt that he will make an excellent Chief for the city of Mountain View. Please extend my congratulations to him as a fellow member of “The Fighting 165th”.
